Betty - Poem

                                                 BETTY.

This is a true tale about a woman called Betty
She sat one day upon the stone jetty.
She gazed about her with a mournful sigh,
'What have I done to deserve such an awful life?'

She looked to the left; she looked to the right.
Not one soul to help her with her plight.
She thought once more of the hard times she'd had,
"How much more must I take?" She screamed as she cried.

'I've lost my poor darling. I've lost my sweet lover.
My life's not worth living. I don't want another!'
She sat and she cried, on the good times she pondered.
Her heart broken now, ---- "I'll end it!" she stammered.

As she sat there mournful and lonely in tears,
Filled with emotion, self pity and fears.
Painful memories came flooding back.
As she secured a huge stone with her leather belt.

Not realising how far her urgency proceeded
With this act of crime, she was too committed.
Not thinking of the loved ones she's leave behind,
How much they loved her and would feel deprived.

All she could think of was to end this pain.
Burning in her head; driving her insane.
Now was the time to jump and forget,
All the past upheaval blocked out the rest.

Not thinking now of the consequences,
Deep in her thoughts, she lunged herself forward.
And into the surging tide she was swallowed
Focusing one moment and then she vanished.

Deep in the water with the pressure upon her,
Her heart thumped and pounded like a jack hammer,
As if it wanted to escape and rise to the surface.
'Fight for your life girl; it still hasn't ended!'

Fighting is easy when you're sat in the sunshine.
She could hear herself thinking, 'I don't want to die!'
This terrible fear grabbed her body and soul,
With every passing second she wanted to live more.

'I must try and get above so I could breath,
I don’t' want to die, my life is worth living.'
She kicked and she thrashed in the muddy water
Without any success with this stone tied to her.

She kicked more vigorously and her leg started to bleed,
It made her more determined for her escape.
Fearing for her life now, she didn't want to die,
Thinking of her children and how they would pine.

They'll be waiting for her to come home to make dinner.
How could she escape from this dreadful dilemma?
She struggled, she kicked and pulled at her ankle,
Her chest concaving, her mind in disorder.

Her eardrums felt as if they had bust wide open
And let all this murky water flush to her brain….when..
With no oxygen entering her lungs;
She felt herself swooning, loosing control.

By instinct only, she was still kicking.
Or was it an act of God. She was no longer thinking.
The cool waters entombed and engulfed her
Her fight nearly over, her spirit had gone.

It seemed an eternity while she had struggled
She was motionless now, and nearly a corpse.
Her brain she could still feel, her eyes could still see.
'Please dear God!  Help me to get free!

She made one last attempt at the belt on her leg,
'Please dear God give me some strength.'
The feeble kicks were so week she could see,
It was no use she thought, 'give in gracefully.'

As if by a miracle, she could see the belt rise
She couldn't believe it  - "I must be loosing my mind.'
Surely it was drifting, and so was she,
'I must get to the surface, Hurry, Hurry, Hurry!'

What ever had happened, she couldn't tell.
Now she was grateful for Heaven or Hell!
'My life has been save; it's a gift from above.'
But maybe it was, ‘cause she couldn't tie knots.

She swam and she swam endlessly it seemed.
She was exhausted, but very relieved.
As she emerged from the cool waters she cried.
'I'll thank you dear God for the rest of my life.'

She lay there shivering on the sand and she thought,
'I'll live once again, I have been spared.
My life will be different from now, I swear!
Please dear God, save me from any more despair.'

As she lay there on the sand, the Sun started to shine.
'This must be an omen, I'll relax for a while'
Her mind froze out all that had happened.
Exhaustion took over, her unhappiness lifted.

She fell fast asleep, dreaming of what
Has caused her to be in that very spot.
He really was handsome and a great lover.
Search the world over, she wouldn't find another.

The day she had met him was hot and sticky.
They were playing tennis up by the 'Reky'.
He asked her the time, she told him a lie,
So she could be with him for a longer time.

They talked and they flirted as they played on the green.
As if they'd known one another for years, it did seem.
They had so much in common; it was easy to see
They were meant for each other forever they'll be.

The months that followed were full of emotion,
They loved and laughed and they caused a commotion.
Where ever they went, they were arm in arm.
Never to be seen a happier pair.

He bought her flowers, she bought him candy.
He kissed her and caressed her and worshipped her body.
She fell for his charm; his love possessed her.
He made her feel good. His kisses were tender.

His soft lips touched hers. She melted with pride.
To know that he loved her, she felt so alive.
At last, she found a lover, who made her feel wanted,
All of her wishes at last have been granted.

They made love beneath the shining full moon.
She gave herself to him whole hearted and swooned.
His loving caresses made her tingle all over.
Her pulse was racing faster; her head was in clover.

Never before could she have said,
She felt so good, in or out of bed.
He loved her and showed her the good things in life.
How much she'd been missing, and did it with pride.

He showed her things, she thought forbidden before,
Made her feel moist, her body aglow.
Her friends told her in envy as she wallowed in pride,
"He's a good looking guy, you'll make a lovely bride."

Little did they know that he never asked her.
She followed him like sheep; he was her master.
She didn't want to loose him with embarrassing talk.
She couldn't take a chance for him to turn and walk.

She knew in her heart that he loved her sincere.
He said so as much when he was near.
He whispered "I love you" in their close embrace
As they puffed and panted with ecstatic release.

He told her every time when he was close.
Her body trembling under his force.
Their lovemaking lasted to the morning light
With lustful passion through out the night.

He told her "I love you" as he stroked her blond hair
He told her "I love you" when he caressed her.
He was obsessed by her voluptuous body, she didn't know,
That's all he was after, the terrible bore.

After a while, her best friends have guessed.
They couldn't tell her she was under his spell,
She could only see the light mirrored in his eyes,
Put there by love straight from her heart.

When she didn't see him, he had an excuse.
She daydreamed her life away for hours and hours.
She knew he was faithful, he promised her so.
She'd no cause to mistrust him; he loved even her soul.

"It's not your soul he's after," this girl inside her would say.
"Hush my poor body you're aching with need!
He'll be back tomorrow of that I am sure."
As she sat there alone close to the phone.

When he came back, she asked him no questions.
She was gratefully obliging with his every suggestion.
She knew that he loved her. He told her right now.
He restored her quivering body, as only he knew how.

He stroked her body, he kissed it all over.
He knew how to please her, to arouse and woo her.
His lovemaking swept her questioning thoughts aside.
She knew that he loved her, this couldn't be lies.

Her work mates had hinted when he'd gone away once again.
A business trip this time over at Wren.
"How could you be so naïve? Don't you see?"
She brushed it aside. 'They're jealous of me'.

Her best friends have told her, even her ex had warned.
"Be very careful, don't you be fooled!
He's a notorious lover the best in town, so I've been told.
Don't end up in the gutter like the others he's mauled.

There's girls in the 'Nut-house', there's girls in the pubs,
Victims of cruelty seeded from love.
He's jilted more women, than I had hot dinners.
Be warned my ex-lover, listen to the titters."

"But I must be different! I'll confront him next time.
Give me some proof of this vicious slime.
He loves me. He told me.  Our love's like a song.
He cares for me deeply. You've got to be wrong."

Deep down inside, she couldn't be sure.
Her inner self told her, she was being fooled.
He is so good looking and such a great lover.
The thoughts of loosing him made her body shudder.

'The way that he loves me, it must be for real.
Or have I said something to drive him away?
I must bide my time and give him a chance
To prove them all wrong, those terrible liars.

I'm just as good looking as the best girls in town.
I've got position, a good figure, and a mind of my own.
My only guilt is that I love him so much.
I’d gave him everything. My life if he wants.

Perhaps I gave in too quickly; I should have led him on.
But it's too late to play hard to get if he had gone.
He knows that I love him. I've shown that I care.
That's what it is, I've scared him away.'

In all honesty, he's just a big bore.
Chasing all the females including the whores.
From what she had heard, if that was true.
She'd be well rid of him. If she could let go.

But she loved him; she missed him when he was gone.
Waiting by the phone for his promised call.
Thinking of the times they've spent together.
All else was forgiven. He's her supreme lover.

Never in her life has she been told,
What an excellent lover she is and very bold.
It was easy to do the things that he asked,
He made them out to be a fun, loving act.

Every single time was a new experience for her,
Always so different, exciting and sensuously tender.
He made her feel important in every way.
He caressed her and kissed her as they lay in the hay.

He made her feel good, he fulfilled her desires.
All her womanhood ached with a burning fire.
He made her so ready with his fondles and kisses.
Her body was his, completely surrendered.

She tingled all over as he came near.
His lips upon hers, so loving, so tender.
He was so full of love, he desired her body.
She was lost in a wave of frenzied hurry.

Hurry that the wave of passion should flow,
Hurry that she should experience it once more.
Again and again he wanted her so.
His passion never quelling; ---How could she let go?

How could she give up this beautiful pleasure?
Send him away? Never! Never! Never!
He was hers now and forever would be.
Hers to exploit, take pleasure and pity.

Pity? Pity because he needed more than she could offer.
Pity if he had to run to another.
She obliged his every whim, fancy and desire.
If he wanted more, then he must be a liar.

He can't love her truly. Now she was sure.
Her body and lust was the target! Nothing more.
What she needed was, a Good man, a lover, a partner.
To stay by her side, not just when he wanted her.

She remembered now that awful night.
Before she sent him away, she asked him outright.
He laughed in her face and admitted his guilt.
"If you don't like it, we can always split."

She wanted to hurt him, to throw him out.
Scratch him and kill him, the bloody lout.
He had hurt her so much, she shook with rage.
The pain in her heart would never erase.

Her heart was splitting open; she was unable to move.
The pain in her chest was ready to explode.
Demoralised, broken, love turned to hate.
"GET OUT YOU BASTARD" she spat in his face.

'That's how it's happened. --- Look at me now!
My life is empty,' she solemnly thought. 'I must try somehow.
The more I think of him,--- I love him still.
With painful memories - I always will.

Will I forgive him? Have I the heart?
He's been everything to me and he tore me apart.
I'm only human so my heart will mend.
Dear God please help me to repent.'

"What have you done girl? You look frozen stiff!
You're leg looks a mess. Were you trapped on the cliffs?
Come here girl, let me cover your body.
Put my coat about you, I'll give you a toddy."

She couldn't say what's happened to someone she didn't know.
He seemed kind and handsome, concerned for her wounds.
This time could be different, somehow she could tell.
As she took a swig out of the flask that he held.

She lay her head on the broad shoulder he offered.
He held her close as she looked at his strong hand.
Curled in his muscular arms, she let her thoughts linger.
No wedding band visible on the third finger.
